After testing Dark Mode for a few months, Facebook Messenger rolled it out globally to all users in April 2019. Unfortunately, users had to manually turn it on or off in their app settings. which means it couldn’t keep up with your system preferences. This would have been particularly annoying for people who only activate dark mode at night, for example, as they would also have to manually change their Messenger settings. Fortunately, the app is starting to receive a new feature, allowing it to follow Android’s global settings instead of having to manually manipulate the app’s color scheme.

Reddit user claims to have received an update to the Facebook Messenger settings UI, adding an option for the app to automatically follow the user’s Android system settings when it comes to using or not dark mode. Interestingly, this option appeared in app version 314.1.0.19.119 only for one of his accounts. I tried to enable the feature on beta 315.0.0.11.119, and it was not found, hinting that it could be enabled through a server side switch.

We hope that it will be rolled out worldwide soon, saving users from having to switch between modes while using Messenger.
