The Metaverse has been in the news ever since Facebook renamed itself Meta in an effort to focus on developing the Metaverse and the technologies around it. Although Meta may have started the trend, other companies have also tried to follow this trend by launching their own version of the platform or by offering technologies and services that allow users to join it. connect. The list includes companies such as Microsoft, Disney, Roblox, Airtel, Samsung, HTC, MG Motor and Spotify to name a few. Needless to say, the collective opinion of the Metaverse and its future remains somewhat optimistic. But not everyone agrees.

Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, speaking at the Aspen Ideas Festival in Aspen, Colorado, recently expressed his confusion over the Metaverse when asked if the platform would affect global relations . “There is no agreement on what the metaverse is, even though a company has changed its name in anticipation of its definition,” Schmidt said, as reported by CNBC Make It, while referring to Facebook’s decision to rename itself Meta.

Speaking about the concept of buying virtual land in the Metaverse, Schmidt said he was not concerned about buying real estate on the platform, adding that the first iterations of the Metaverse will revolve around games and digital currency.

“I’m not worried about buying large tracts of private real estate in the metaverse myself… It’s not a concern I have every day,” he added.

But it’s not the first time

Notably, this is the first time Schmidt has spoken about the Meta version of the Metaverse. Speaking with CNBC’s Squawk Box last year, the former Google CEO remained doubtful that Meta would build the metaverse. “I look forward to great innovation in the metaverse,” Schmidt said at the time.

“I’ve been waiting for about thirty years… As to whether Facebook is going to build this, I don’t know,” he added.

Mixed reactions on the metaverse

Interestingly, the tech world has been split on their views on the matter. While Tesla CEO Elon Musk scoffed at the concept, Microsoft founder Bill Gates had made predictions about it.

“I think we are far from disappearing into the metaverse. It just sounds like a buzzword,” Musk said, adding, “There is a danger that it will. But I’m currently unable to see a compelling metaverse situation. He made the comments while being interviewed by YouTube channel The Babylon Bee.

Gates, on the other hand, in his essay entitled “Reason for Optimism after a Difficult Year” on Gates Notes, stated that “the metaverse will become a reality in the next two to three years.”
