Gumtree warns of new Whatsapp scam targeting unintentional customers
Durban – If you get a whatsapp or text from someone telling you they made payment through a Gumtree shipping and delivery service – it’s a scam.
This is according to Gumtree South Africa – one of the largest online shopping platforms in the country – which on Wednesday night warned users not to be fooled by the message because they do not have a shipping service and Delivery.
In addition, Gumtree South Africa said customers were directed to Gumtree sites “spoofed” by scammers.
According to Gumtree, crooks get phone numbers from classifieds sites and make contact via Whatsapp or text.
They then indicate that they have made a direct payment through a Gumtree shipping and delivery service (which does not exist).
The victim is directed to a fraudulent site and asked to enter their credit card details in order to receive funds.
Louis Bosman, customer service supervisor for Gumtree South Africa, says the scam originated in the UK but there have been local reports of the scam in the past 48 hours.
“Gumtree does not currently offer any delivery service of any kind. While these types of scams are very compelling, note that an official Gumtree page will have gumtree.co.za in the URL and https: // at the start. Gumtree will never ask you for your credit card details over the phone or through WhatsApp / Text. “
He urges all customers to report suspicious buyers to the Gumtree helpdesk (help.gumtree.co.za) and to familiarize themselves with the trust and security guidelines provided on the site.
