How to permanently delete your WhatsApp account

WhatsApp is used by millions of users around the world. The Facebook-owned messaging platform played a crucial role during the pandemic in helping everyone on the platform connect with others when they couldn’t physically meet. WhatsApp has been in the news recently and this is mainly due to the introduction of the new privacy policy for Indian users. WhatsApp’s new privacy policy reveals the type of data the platform collects and shares with its parent company Facebook. The policy went into effect on May 15. Also read – Good news! Since the announcement of the new terms and services in January 2021, users have objected to the new privacy policy. Until last month, WhatsApp warned that users who do not agree to the new policy will lose access to their account. After being questioned by the Indian government, WhatsApp has now said that users will be able to continue using their app even if they do not agree to the new privacy policy. There has been a lot of confusion around the new policy and it has led many people to leave the popular messaging app and join other alternative platforms such as Signal and Telegram. If you also want to quit WhatsApp, there is a way to delete the account forever. If you want to temporarily deactivate your WhatsApp account, that’s not what you can do.

WhatsApp offers an option to permanently delete your account, but under no circumstances can you temporarily deactivate your account. On that note, let’s take a step-by-step guide to permanently delete your WhatsApp account.

How to delete a WhatsApp account: 5 easy steps

Step 1: Open a WhatsApp account

2nd step: Go to the Settings> Account> Delete my account menu

Step 3: Enter your mobile number in full international format and select the Delete my account option

Step 4: Select a reason why you want to delete the account

Step 5: Tap the Delete my account option

WhatsApp notes that “it may take up to 90 days for your WhatsApp information to be deleted from the start of the deletion process.”
