Michael Bisping thinks ‘f****** nerd’ Mark Zuckerberg’s interest in the UFC ‘will only get more fans’
Michael Bisping thinks Mark Zuckerberg’s presence at UFC Vegas 61 can lead to good things for the sport of MMA.
Zuckerberg, co-founder of Facebook and CEO of Meta Platforms, was on hand for last Saturday’s card at APEX, which was closed to the rest of the public and media.
While many people were scratching their heads over Zuckerberg’s private fight card, Bisping was on the other side.
“Mark Zuckerberg was present. Pretty cool to see,” Bisping said on his podcast Believe me.
Bisping co-host and UFC light heavyweight Anthony Smith thinks Zuckerberg’s presence could do wonders for the UFC fan base – especially given his power, wealth and notoriety , which the former middleweight champion agrees with. .
“Those are all good points, and it’s not an insult to him and it sounds like a silly comment, but [more fans can get into the sport because of] someone who is as nerdy as he is. He’s a tech genius. You’ve seen him, and he can be described as, in quotes, a bit of a nerd. But to see a guy like him who has this influence, who makes this wealth, who has this power, and I don’t know what to think of Mark Zuckerberg, he’s crazy ****** nerd, let’s be honest, but he’s awesome because he’s there and watching the UFC.
“I think it will open up, potentially, another realm of people because MMA is hugely popular, but there are still skeptics, there are critics and there are still people who won’t give it a shot. But seeing someone who is clearly extremely smart like him, being a fan of the sport, and his wife out there enjoying it, it’s only going to get more fans.
Zuckerberg and his wife were cage side with UFC President Dana White, both reacting to the action unfolding throughout the event.
It’s Bisping’s hope that Zuckerberg’s interest in sports can help find new fans who haven’t given the sport a chance.
“[It’s] this acceptance of a wider audience, because he is usually not who you think [is] the ‘just bleed’ MMA fan,” Bisping said. “My mother-in-law isn’t a typical MMA fan, but she fell in love with it straight away, and I think when people watch with an open mind, they’ll [too].”
