School Resources Officer Used Facebook to Contact Minor for Sexual Purposes, Files Show | New

MONCKS CORNER – A police academy resource officer accused of engaging in criminal sexual behavior with a minor appears to have contacted a high school student through Facebook Messenger for a month from early May, records show.
Zedrick Maurice Smalls, 50, who was fired by Moncks Corner Police, has been charged with four counts of second degree criminal sexual behavior with a minor and one count of third degree criminal sexual behavior with a minor, according to Berkeley County Court records. .
The sexual behavior of which Smalls is accused took place between May 1 and June 1, according to State Law Enforcement Division records. The victim said Smalls communicated through the Messenger program, according to an incident report from Moncks Corner Police.
Second degree criminal sexual misconduct accuses an accused of threatening someone with violence to make them obey. Third degree criminal sexual misconduct accuses an accused of coercing or coercing a person into a sexual act.
Police confiscated a black iPhone from the victim, according to reports. The victim has not been identified.
SLED is investigating the charges. The request for an investigation was made by the Moncks Corner Police Department, SLED spokesperson Tommy Crosby wrote in a June 14 press release.
Smalls was taken to the Berkeley County Jail at around 12:40 p.m. on June 14 and remained there on June 15 without bail. The case will be continued by the 9th Circuit prosecutor’s office.
