The metaverse is spreading to WhatsApp, with the release of avatars looming
Beta testers can create their virtual selves now
WhatsApp is continually adding new features, as we just saw with the ability to create and share links to whatsapp video and voice calls. Since he’s owned by Meta, though, these new additions sometimes feel more in service of his parents’ goals than anything else – and for now, that means anything Metaverse. We first heard about WhatsApp’s plans to implement Facebook’s Bitmoji-style avatars earlier this year, and now they’re finally starting to arrive for some beta testers.
WABetaInfo reports that the latest beta version of the app (v188.8.131.52) has started allowing testers to set up avatars on the platform for the first time. Similar to how your Bitmoji character generates a new sticker pack for Snapchat and other messaging services, your custom WhatsApp avatar will also generate a new sticker pack for use in the app.
Setting up WhatsApp avatars is quite simple. Beta testers report finding a new option called Avatar in the app’s settings. From the sound of things now, the experience still has some bugs, but that’s why we have betas. Once you’re done creating an avatar, there are loads of Meta marks everywhere, and you should find several categories of new stickers to choose from. Once the avatar is set up, you can revisit the Settings page or the Sticker Details page to further edit your avatar.
As this is all still very early days, it’s entirely possible that avatar creation or usage workflows will go through some minor changes before they’re ready for the world to see. WhatsApp hasn’t specified a timeline for rolling out the stable channel, but if you’re eager to try it out now, install the latest WhatsApp beta and hope to gain access to the feature – or just stick with Bitmoji for now. . These already work with both WhatsApp and Snapchat.
