In Inside Higher Educationwesleyan president Michael Roth ’78 writes about the role of higher education in a culture war. “’Culture War’ is an apt name for this kind of basic scapegoating – and so much more. When online groups target an individual or organization over inappropriate use of language, this, we are told, is a “culture war”. The widely discussed silence of speakers and the loudly lamented self-censorship on campuses (and everywhere) – this too is considered a “culture war”. (June 1)

In MV time, Harvey Garneau Jr. ’77 shares an op-ed titled “A Flag of Many Colors”, which talks about growing up gay in the 70s and how he met his partner, Dan Waters ’77 in Wesleyan. “In addition to a well-rounded liberal arts background, I came out of my four years at Wesleyan University with the nickname ‘Hal’ and with Dan Waters. In freshman year, we were both in the same dorm on different floors. We met, became close friends, became inseparable, fell deeply in love and have been together ever since. Finding the perfect person that you know you want to spend the rest of your life with is a challenge in the best of times. Being gay during this time in history became exponentially more difficult. Anyone who grew up gay and reached adolescence in the 1970s knew that due to the not-so-subtle hate and bigotry in their regard, it was prudent to keep their sexuality hidden as best they could.(June 1)
According Broadway worldOPERA America selected Stephanie Fleischmann ’84 as the recipient of the 2022 Campbell Opera Librettist Award. Conceived and funded by renowned librettist and lyricist Mark Campbell, the award is the first award in American operatic history created specifically to honor the work of opera librettists, and is accompanied by a $7,000 prize to support the winner’s creative and professional development. Entertainment article for his role in season 42 of “Survivor”. “The social game that Mike was playing at the age of 57, bonding strongly with people under half his age, was super impressive. He won a big challenge, he dominated on making the fire, and you to know I love how it represented Wesleyan University (where our two sons attended). He stumbled in his final Tribal, however, presenting no clear message as to why he deserved to win. (May 25)
