WhatsApp rival Telegram is finally getting group video calls, other new features. Details here
Telegram introduced a slew of features in its latest update, including group video calling, screen sharing, noise cancellation in voice chats, animated backgrounds, a dedicated Bot menu and much more. other. The group video calling feature is Telegram’s third major voice chat update in the past six months, which can be used for online courses, business meetings, and family reunions. It also added new animated emojis and allowed the import of custom third-party stickers.
Group video calls and screen sharing
Users can make group video calls by tapping the “Share my video” option in any active session. The group video chat option is currently available for the first 30 people who join the voice chat (while the number of audio-only participants is unlimited). Telegram has claimed it will increase this limit soon as voice chats support streaming games, live events and more.
To start a voice chat, consult the ⋮ menu in the profile of any group where you are an administrator (on iOS, you will find a “Voice chat” button directly in the group’s profile)
The screen sharing feature can be accessed by simply pressing the menu button and tapping on the screen sharing option followed by the app permission. In order to boost the voice quality, Telegram has also introduced a noise cancellation option. This feature can be activated during a live voice chat.
Support for tablets and desktops
Tablets and computers have more screen space and offer more display options. Users simply need to tap to open the side panel and see a split-screen view of the video grid and participant list, optimized for portrait and landscape orientation. Voice conversations on the desktop open in a separate window, users can type and talk without minimizing anything. Desktop apps also have selective screen sharing to broadcast an individual program instead of a particular user’s entire screen. When using the desktop app, and screen sharing by a specific user is automatically pinned.
Animated backgrounds with create and share options
Telegram also introduced animated backgrounds. Telegram claims that these multicolored gradient wallpapers are algorithmically designed and move with a beautiful aesthetic every time users send a message. Telegram offers this feature with many default themes preinstalled.
Users can find more animated backgrounds in the settings. Android: Chat settings> Change chat background. iOS: Appearance> Chat background.
Moreover, if a user wants to make their custom animated background with the composition of different colors and patterns, the platform also offers the same. Users should choose three or four colors to unlock the animation and then add an optional pattern for more style.
Improved user security measures and messaging interface with new animated emojis
Login info reminders are becoming an essential feature to keep user’s phone number up to date on Telegram. This ensures that a user can still log into their account. If the phone number has changed, users can update it quickly from the new callback in Settings on iOS.
Telegram announced that Android users will receive these reminders in the next update. Users on all platforms will receive a notification from Telegram whenever their two-step verification settings are changed.
Users can now send stickers and emojis seamlessly from keyboards to the chat window – with light animations that won’t affect battery life.
On iOS, this also applies to media you send from the attachments panel, and even text messages. Your input text smoothly transforms into the message bubble as it flies in the chat.
In another interface change on iOS, Telegram introduced transparent backgrounds which are now partially visible through the header and footer in threads, giving the interface a sleek new look.
Two new gradient app icons are available in Settings> Appearance in addition to the classic blue and black versions.
BOT API 5.3 with dedicated BOT menu and sticker import capability for developers
Telegram made it easier for users to communicate with bots, adding a special menu button that allows them to browse and send commands. Bots can also change the placeholder in the input field to give the user a better idea of what kind of message they are expecting. Additionally, Bot developers can now create commands that change based on UI language and chat type, as well as special commands that only appear in specific chats or for admins.
Sticker Bot on Telegram can help users create new sticker packs as well as get usage stats for their stickers on Telegram.
Telegram introduced third-party developer access with tools to build apps that help people generate new, unique personalized stickers and import their designs into Telegram with just one click.
If the developers want Telegram users to install the created stickers, they don’t need any additional apps. They can just upload their sticker set using Telegram’s bot and then share the link with others.
